How to know if you might want to Experience TangoForge

Are you bored with regular tango classes? We will take you quickly to interesting movements.

Do you feel you don’t receive enough instruction in the woman-follower-Revel role? We give 50% of our instruction to making sure you know how to perceive and how to move.

Do teachers/dancers tell you to have “more connection” but don’t tell you how? We have the specifications for this. Don’t spend more time feeling bad about yourself when people give you vague criticisms. We’ve spent years studying the very best dancers and figuring out how to directly teach these delicious sensations.

Do you want to really understand tango, instead of just copying the teacher? We call this being a TangoGeek and this is how we are. We teach and dance from the most basic elements of tango, and we constantly distill our technique system to make a compact, elegant conceptual system that will help you diagnose your own errors, and to learn from videos and other teachers.

Why study with Vio?

Training: I danced in the top milongas of Buenos Aires for more than 300 nights in the virtuoisic era from 2008-2011. I took 30 hours seminar from Chicho Frúmboli in 2010. Private lessons with El Pulpo, Dana Frígoli. Extensive training at DNI, Buenos Aires.

Scientific commitment: I have a PhD, and I bring my scientific skills of research, observation, analysis, theory, and praxis to critically analyzing everything I’ve been taught, everything I see and feel, everything I say, and the results in my students’ bodies. From 2010-2014 I worked full time analyzing all the pedagogy I learned, testing and questioning every single technical point. I experimented on my students until I could get them to feel like my teachers and the best dancers I’d ever danced with. Every biomechanical claim in our pedagogy has been verified by two academic physiologists.

Pedagogical experience: I draw on years of university teaching experience to create intellectually coherent classes which empower students.

Ethics: I have devoted my time and energy to the principle that tango can be communicated in a way that everyone can understand and implement, so that teaching is not a cult of personality and metaphor but an objective, verifiable toolbox that students can use on their own.

Evidence: Marks tell me the know when they’re dancing with one of my Revels because of the sensitivity and readiness. I trained two of the most desirable marks in Sydney, Australia. One was an absolute beginner when he started working with me. The best evidence is my crew (the Apprentices) who came to me in mid-2016 as beginner and intermediate dancers and within a year are able to diagnose and correct their own and others’ technical flaws as well as able to improvise with the entire repertoire of tango in both roles with clear technique.

FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

What is Biomechanics? Physical training so you know exactly how to use your body to feel smooth and beautiful. Details über die Trainingsbausteine.

What is Improvisation? Instead of teaching sequences for memorization, we teach you to dance from the 25 elements of tango.

What happens at the Practica? We review and practice the material from the Impro course, and make games and drills for improvisation. We also practice on a narrow line of dance so that you confidently and safely use your whole improvisation even in tight traffic conditions.

Do I need to bring a partner? Most of our students come to class alone. Tango partners are welcome and are expected to dance with other students. This ensures that no one is ever feeling dependent on one partner for pleasure and development.

What if there are more women in the class? You won’t notice. Every TangoForge student learns both roles because it accelerates learning and nurtures healthy attitudes.

What if I want more/less instruction? Students have access to the whole class schedule and can learn at your own pace.

What if I miss a week? We video the weekly classes so you can study when you can’t make it.

Why does every package include private lessons? We want to be part of your development and we want to personally check the accuracy of your learning. (Absolute beginners have weekly privates. Experienced dancers have one or two privates per month.)

Why don’t you allow drop-ins? We are a community of students who are committed to their own development and who support one another. We commit and invest in one another so that we can grow together. This doesn’t mean that you must be here every week. Everyone knows their own schedule and can create a custom program for participation.

Why don’t you have a beginner’s class? We find most beginner’s classes too boring, so we want beginners to really see where tango can go! We welcome dancers of all levels in the Biomechanics and Impro-Lexicon classes so please jump right on to our 6-months tour of the Tango Lexicon. Our community loves to help new dancers discover possibilities.

In what languages do you teach? We teach in English and German. We can translate to Castellano and Japanese.  Wir unterrichten in deutscher und englischer Sprache.

When do the courses start? You can start on any day of the month. We cycle through the whole Improvisation-Lexikon every 6 months.

What if I’m not in Berlin? We have Online Study Programs .

Can I just try?  We offer a week pass for €40, which includes all the classes, practica and a private lesson.

What if I’m just visiting Berlin? You are welcome to take a week pass.

Can I take private lessons without group classes? Yes, please just send a mail to to make an appointment. In Deutsch:

What’s the address of the Studio? We are in Mitte, near Rosenthaler Platz, close to the U6/8, S1/2/25, M1/5/8/10/12. Since we do not allow drop-ins, we request that you register or contact us before your first visit. Once you are in the program, you can come to all the classes anytime without an appointment.

When I started out, my maestro would show us a sequence, a mini-choreography. It took me so long to figure out that I was supposed to improvise. I didn’t know in the beginning because nobody told me. If you want to understand the dance, in my opinion that’s the worst way to teach – with sequences. Especially with a beginner. They need to know the rules of the dance, and from there they can create, they’re free – they’re not prisoners of the tango.
