Collect (deprecated) is a technique often taught to beginning dancers in which Revels are exhorted to grab their legs together at the end of each step.

While we do indeed want the legs to pass close to each other for a moment between steps (with a sexy relaxation of the knee and ankle of the free leg and slight internal rotation of the hip –the only time we use internal rotation) this is a position we pass through, not a destination.

Collecting has several unfortunate results:

  1. Collect abrogates the second projection, which is crucial to crosses, rebote, parada, voleos, etc.
  2. The tension induced by collect usually results in a free leg that is not free. The free leg belongs to the mark.
