The term ‘nuevo’ was coined by tango innovator Petróleo in the 1940s. It was also used to describe the groundbreaking tango music of Astor Piazzola in the late 1950s. It also refers to the work of Gustavo Naveira’s Cochabamba Investigation Group of the mid-1990s, which analyzed tango dance to its most basic elements. (Up to that point, tango dance had been understood and learned through sequences.)
