A rebellion is a daring and dangerous effort to disrupt the current state of affairs in loyalty to a deeper truth.
I’m not saying I’ve got the only bead on truth, or depth.
What I do, how I teach, and what I write is an expression of my commitment to the best and richest tango I have experienced and can imagine. Honoring this commitment, I often take uncomfortable, unpopular, and unstrategic positions.
This is not because I like to upset people.
It’s because I think too often we conform to situations that are not in our best interest or in the interest of growing and caring for our community, and finding the richest possible expression of ourselves, our art, and our precious lives. I dare to make a mess in the interest of creating space for other people to explore, to express. I see it as a community service.
Some of the deeper truths I serve:
- The most sublime and healing aspect of tango is connection between two human beings.
- Tango can be joyful and lighthearted.
- Dancing both roles expands us technically and experientially.
- The participation of gay and transgender people in tango enriches our experience of the connections between dance, community, sensuality, and gender performance.
- The same technique applies to dancing across the continuum of embraces and movements. Talk about “styles of tango” is divisive and inaccurate. There is one tango and it is alive.
My blog is intended to make space to reflect on, investigate, question, and develop tango as a global living art and community, to cherish the precious delight and connection tango offers and to expand it generously.
