Getting Started with Argentine Tango

If you want to feel like you’re flying, if you want to lose yourself, if you want to learn new ways to communicate with people, if you love tango music, or if you’ve got yet another reason, start dancing Argentine Tango now. Don’t waste a minute! Soon you’ll have a rich social life, and a place to wear fancy-dress whenever you feel like it. Dig through your closet and find some shoes that don’t grip the floor, because that’s all you need.

You do not need a partner to start learning tango. In group lessons, everyone rotates several times during the class and you’ll get a chance to meet and dance with lots of different people. In private lessons you dance with the teacher. Most teachers both lead and follow, so they work directly with you. Of course, if you want to learn with your partner or a friend, that’s fine too.

You also do not need any previous dance experience to dance Argentine Tango. You don’t need “rhythm”. If you took a salsa class and felt it was fast and stressful, you’ll like Argentine Tango much better because you don’t have to hit the beat at all (you can dance to the melody if you want). If you’ve mastered salsa and you’re looking for a new challenge, you’ll find it in Tango, where every single step is improvised. If you’ve had some yoga or pilates that will be an advantage, but also not necessary.

If you are a woman follower you will be easily charmed by your first taste of tango. If you are a man, read this.

Should I take group classes or private lessons?

While group classes are fun and social, you will learn faster, better, and cheaper in private lessons. Many students take a private lesson and a couple of group classes every week, using the group classes as an opportunity to practice. More details about private lessons.
